Act Local, Think Global: Discovering & Developing Tomorrow’s Stars Where They Live
Traditional wisdom says that in order to be discovered in the music industry, you need to move to one of three hub cities: Los Angeles, New York, or Nashville. That means there is a tremendous amount of talent going undiscovered throughout the U.S., as many musicians don’t have the means or ability to live in one of these cities. The solution is to act local and think global, establishing a homebase in up-and-coming regional scenes and finding local stars to bring to a worldwide audience. This approach led to the explosion of Memphis rapper Moneybagg Yo in 2021, with his “A Gangsta’s Pain” album spending multiple weeks at #1 on the Billboard 200 and serving as a springboard for local producers and songwriters YC and RealRed. In this panel, attendees will meet several executives who are pursuing this strategy and learn how they can apply lessons from their successes to their own work.

Building on Borrowed Lands
Remember the day Facebook and Instagram went offline? For several hours, two of the biggest platforms for promotion and information disbursement were nowhere to be found, leaving social media managers, artists, and labels everywhere scrambling. These "borrowed lands" that we've come to depend on for engagement were suddenly gone, and nobody knew when—or if—they would return.

Building On Borrowed Lands will examine the ongoing debate over where artists and their teams focus their community-building efforts. A panel of experts in marketing and publicity will discuss the ever-evolving challenge of reaching people in the digital space, including the best places for engagement, the value of owning your content, and the timeless tips for success that still work today.

The Power of Personal Equity & Identity in the Music Business
In order to build equity – whether financial or figurative – professionals and artists in the music business need to understand and believe that their biggest asset is in fact who they are as a person and the various things that make them great. The music business is complex in that it’s often said to be more of a lifestyle than it is a job. Every day (and sometimes every second), we are reminded of our role within the industry and how it molds our identity and our future. But what about our personal identities and our own long-term goals? Aren’t we more than just the companies we tag in our social bios and the artists we work with and for? Does our love of music get in the way of celebrating the other important parts of our life? Join us for a non-traditional panel as we dive into what it means to be a human being, both in and out of the industry, and try to separate our panelists from their music business identities. The real question: Is that even possible? The pandemic forced us to reflect, adapt, and evolve – how does this topic play into the conversation?

Hands-On Workshop: DIY Data Analytics
The widespread deployment of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) means that anyone can access detailed artist and song data from a variety of streaming services.  Those APIs provide the basis of a wide range of data platforms that provide services to artists, managers, and labels. This workshop will give you hands-on experience how those APIs work.  Bring your laptop to the tutorial and you'll learn how to access data and pull it into a Google Sheet using open-source customer functions to build a basic real-time "dashboard" of your own.  We'll then use another free tool to turn that Google Sheet into an easy-to-access "app" on your mobile phone. Anyone in the music industry who wants to learn how these data tools work for themselves will learn the basics in this workshop.

Music Consumption Has Gone Global, Music Publishing Is Still Local - What Gives?
With the ubiquity of music and video streaming, tracking music usage across the globe in dozens of languages and dialects has become impossible using the “tried and true” systems of yore that were put into place when Ford created the Model A. Right’s holders can no longer rely on collecting even part of what is theirs around the globe without the help of technology.  While the US and Europe try to recreate the systems, countries like India and Africa are putting systems into place.  How can we all work together to streamline getting our creators paid?

In this session, participants will discuss how AI is working to solve this huge problem that has left the industry baffled and artists/rights holders unpaid for decades. Attendees will learn how technology, instead of teams of accident-prone people, now match millions of works with their appropriate owners regardless of where in the world, what language or what platform the works are played on. This session is for any artist or rights holder who doesn’t know “where’s the money?”

The New State of Music Fandom
As the attention economy surges on and the music creator community multiplies, music fandom is undergoing a transformation. No longer do fans organize around a small legion of superstars hand-selected by major labels. Fandom is now more fragmented than ever, as fans organize into insular, online micro-communities on platforms like TikTok, Discord and Twitch. But thanks to these platforms, music fans are also more engaged, spreading their fandom through memes and UGC and often even co-creating with their favorite artists. At this panel, MIDiA analyst Tatiana Cirisano will present findings from MIDiA’s state of fandom report, set for release in spring 2022, and discuss with panelists how artists can leverage these findings to build more engaged fanbases.

Legislative Outlook: Is EU Copyright Law A Blueprint for the Future of the Music Industry & Growing Creator Economy?
The EU has begun course-correcting copyright legislation that has plagued the creation and exchange of music online for years. And we’ve seen in similar instances, especially when localized policy is enacted on global companies, that EU law tends to influence global action. The US is no exception and has been teasing a revision to its existing copyright laws for quite some time.

As the distribution of content continues to reach new heights with the growth of the creator economy, we can predict more focus than ever will be on providing rightsholders with the attribution and compensation they’re due. And if we are to use the current state of EU copyright laws as a blueprint for the next five years, we can anticipate other markets, including the US, realigning priorities for copyright.

Join us for a lively panel discussion exploring how EU and US legislation may impact global copyright changes that benefit music rightsholders, what other changes we may see as this shift in liability spreads around the globe, and how rightsholders can set themselves up for future success with copyright and licensing solutions.

Innovative Inclusion: Closing the Diversity Gap
It goes without saying that the global, Covid-19 pandemic–appropriately nicknamed “The Great Accelerator”–put the spotlight on the pre-existing, social challenges that would no longer be deemed “inappropriate talk at work.” The music business, which is no stranger to constant change, finds itself once again facing profound organizational shifts due to societal and technological influences. On this panel, Naledi Nyahuma Seck, The Orchard’s VP of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion will moderate a discussion on how companies are lowering the barriers to entry, and successfully building and maintaining inclusive, innovative cultures

Key takeaways:
1. Best practices for empowering, engaging and attracting employees, creators and partners of diverse backgrounds to your organization
2. Discuss Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and how to embed these three pillars throughout your business
3. Strategies to close the digital divide of historically excluded groups, internally and externally
4. Examples of how a focus on diversity, equity and inclusion positively impacts your business’ bottomline

The MLC’s Tools and Resources: An Inside Look and Live Demonstration
Join representatives from the Mechanical Licensing Collective (The MLC) for this interactive workshop that will explore some of the tech tools The MLC has developed that help its membership – comprised of music publishers and administrators and self-administered songwriters, composers and lyricists – maximize their digital audio mechanical royalty income.

Hosted by The MLC’s Head of Rights Management, Maurice Russell and Manager of Publishers Services Sean McNamara, the session will open with a brief introduction of The MLC, including what led to its creation, the scope of the organization’s work and which rightsholders must join The MLC for free to be eligible to receive digital audio mechanical royalties.

The MLC team will then be joined by an independent music publisher member of The MLC for a spotlight of several key MLC resources, which will include:

• A detailed look into The MLC Portal, where members of The MLC register, maintain and update their musical works data, as well as access The MLC’s Matching and Claiming tools;

• A live demonstration of The MLC’s Data Quality Initiative (DQI), which any rightsholder can use to compare the quality of their musical works data with the data listed in The MLC’s public database;

• A real-time walk-through of The MLC’s Matching Tool, which enables members of The MLC to search for unmatched sound recording uses compiled by The MLC and propose matches to songs those members have registered with The MLC.

In addition, individuals from The MLC’s knowledgeable Support Team will also be available to answer questions.

Taking Metadata to the Next Level: Implementing DDEX's MEAD & PIE Standards
Next-level music discovery requires rich and deep information about songs that goes well beyond just track titles and artists. This workshop will review implementations of DDEX's Media Enrichment and Description (MEAD) and Party Identification and Enrichment (PIE) standards, which together communicate rich metadata about albums, tracks and all the contributors to them, including, for example, historic chart position, lyrics or artist’s influences. This workshop session will provide an explanation of both standards and how they were developed, information about their basic structures, and how they relate to other standards in the DDEX family. There will also be presentations from DDEX members that have, or are in the process of, implementing these standards into their systems, along with a Q&A to enable attendees to discuss the specifics of their own implementations. You do not need to be a DDEX member to attend or implement these standards - just have an interest in delivering a quality metadata-driven service!

Eluvio: Powering NFT Creation For Dolly Parton. The Masked Singer & More
This fireside chat will discuss the convergence of blockchain technology, NFTs, and streaming performances with Emmy-award winning technologist, Michelle Munson, CEO and co-founder of Eluvio (https://live.eluv.io). In this session, participants will learn how Music Business Association member Eluvio’s eco-friendly blockchain platform provided the back-end technology for Dolly Parton’s recent SXSW performance, NFTs, and groundbreaking NFT album of “Run, Rose, Run” as part of the “Dollyverse” developed in collaboration with Blockchain Creative Labs. Participants will also hear about the creation of the “Maskverse” for Fox’s “The Masked Singer”, the #1 entertainment show on television, as well as how this innovative blockchain platform was used for ticketing and livestreaming of performances, such as the Black Eyed Peas, Rita Ora, along with numerous independent artists, music festivals, and film projects. Participants will learn how to make NFT creation more frictionless; that not all NFTs are created equally; and how NFTs can serve as media, beyond today’s limited popular notion of digital images. The session will also discuss how blockchain technology is changing the economics of streaming music and performances, allowing artists/publishers to control all aspects of monetization and rights, ticketing, streaming, minting NFTs, and trading and re-monetization of their digital content.

Navigating New Strategies: How A&R, Artist Marketing, & Distribution Come Together in the Age of Streaming
Over the last few years, a seemingly endless list of success routes have been paved for getting great new music out to a global streaming audience. Niche playlists, easy access to distribution, and a world where streaming services are now ubiquitous have made it simple for listeners to experiment with a ton of new music.

Are we finally at the “even playing field” the independent world has dreamed we’d achieve? Whether it be TikTok break-outs totally blowing up, low-fi hip-hop made by unknown beatmakers streaming to a massive yet passive audience of people studying, or a young talent like Bad Bunny blowing past the boundaries of a once ghettoized genre like Reggaeton into the farthest reaches of pop, wherein all of this is an A&R strategy one can actually “plan?”

Further, in this now very boundary-less world, where music from Puerto Rico, Colombia, South Africa, Brazil or South Korea has just as much of a chance as music from London, Miami, or New York in finding a huge audience, how do artist and businesses with no financial backing actually take advantage of all of this opportunity?

Market and Trends: What’s Now and What’s Next?
We are going to take a deep dive into what the influx of money from outside investors means for the industry. Is it democratizing or is it reinforcing separations? Is commoditization of music a good thing for the industry in the long run or only in the short term? We’ll also discuss post-acquisition plans for artists and labels and how it’s not over the day the deal closes.

A DAO Named Sue
Meet Sue, discovered last night in a Honky Tonk. Sue is an artist destined for great things, it’s so obvious that rather than wait until Music Biz 2032, we will now condense Sue’s future into 60 minutes: Hear how we will organize a fan community and curate marketing using digital tokens. Working with other artists we will build a co-operative channel on Audius.co. We will set up a Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO) to fractionalise Sue’s IP assets, incentivize early stage investors, and raise recording and touring budgets. The artist will pay a record label an advance in return for its marketing skills, and connect to new fans through a sold out virtual Ryman Auditorium show. We will describe setting up Sue’s metadata to link directly to bank accounts, and how by joining a Collective Management DAO Sue’s licensing opportunities will be maximized.

We will describe an optimal business model, looking at recent examples of artists leveraging Web 3.0. We won’t be evangelizing for buzzwords and tech dreams, we will be exploring substantive business questions which arise from applying existing tech. What are the main street (not fringe) risks and consequences. What are the actionable business cases for evolving?

The Prioritization of Mental Health & Wellness in the Music Industry
Research shows that a high percentage of artists battle symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress. These issues don't only affect musicians on stage and also manifest in every one in their orbit — from roadies and sound engineers to agents and family members. In a path to preserve our music industry, how can we focus on sustainability while prioritizing mental health and wellness? This panel will feature a round table discussion between label executives, talent managers, artists, organizations, and mental health apps focused on solving this problem.

FAIR PAY FOR EVERY PLAY: Empowering Creator Rights in the Digital Age
We believe that music can be a vastly bigger industry than it is today by doubling down on truth and transparency. This will allow creators, publishers, labels and collection societies to enable growth for the entire industry. Reducing operative overhead, targeting growth opportunities, and making music a true asset class will allow the industry to finally become its best self. We also need robust technology to provide accurate global data consumption reports and guarantee revenue collection and distribution to all interested parties. So, join us in our discussion on how to create greater transparency, bridge the data and information gaps and achieve ‘Fair Pay for Every Play’. This panel is for anyone who believes we can do better and is interested in the sustainable growth of the music industry. Remember, “We can make it if we try!”

Independence and Equity: The New Business of Music
The last decade has seen an upending of the institutions and gatekeepers that have long dictated which musicians and songwriters are able to access promotion, distribution, and other creative and financial resources.

More recently, the music industry has faced a reckoning around equity and inclusion. While white men continue to dominate the halls of power, the country’s focus on racial and gender justice has brought new and real change to the industry - both in terms of more diverse leadership and A&R and programmers recognizing the value of diverse rosters.

Our panel of leaders from multiple sectors will discuss what the music business could look like in the coming years, informed by this much-needed focus on equity, coupled with the past few years’ rise of creator-oriented music services.

Music Biz Brunch sponsored by CMA
Doors open at 10:45 AM CT

As in years past, the event will be opened by a speech delivered by Music Biz’s President, Portia Sabin, her first since taking the helm as leader of the organization in September 2019. Sabin is set to discuss the Association’s evolution, spurred at first by the tragic and challenging events of the COVID-19 pandemic’s early days and renewed calls for swift action on issues of inclusion and social justice both in and out of the music business, as well as how the pandemic has allowed Music Biz to better meet the needs of its global member community and the industry at large.

The ceremony will also feature a conversation with and performance by mother-daughter singer-songwriter team, O.N.E the Duo, courtesy of brunch sponsor Country Music Association (CMA). Tennessean Nashville Country Music Reporter, Marcus K. Dowling will moderate the conversation.

O.N.E the Duo comprises Nashville-based mother Tekitha and daughter Prana Supreme, both with ties to Hip-Hop royalty — Prana’s father is RZA, the founder, producer & de-facto leader of Wu-Tang Clan, and Tekitha is known for her work as the group’s featured female vocalist. Despite this, the two have created their own, stripped-down musical style blending their Hip-Hop roots with the creative energy and storytellers of Nashville. As the duo moves forward, their goal is to tell their story through as many different mediums as possible — the written word, film, and of course, through music.

Employee Resource Groups in the Music Industry
As the music business reckons with its history of inequity and homogeneity, especially in its leadership, it's become clear that hiring a more diverse staff is not enough - these employees need support and community within the workplace. Employee Resource Groups can be excellent resources for employees from underrepresented communities within workplaces of all sizes and in all parts of the music business.

Our panel, comprising ERG leaders from publishers and labels, will discuss why ERGs are important in the music industry, how workplaces can support ERGs and how employees can start them, and the purposes and objectives of these groups. ERGs can have a major impact on workplace culture and community, and we'll discuss how employees from all groups and workplaces can benefit. We'll also touch on how ERGs and similar affinity groups can work outside of the U.S.

In today’s hyper-connected streaming world, internet-enabled, connected TVs (CTVs) are increasingly becoming the screen of choice by consumers to enjoy their favorite content, and it’s creating new opportunities to distribute, program, and monetize music videos. It’s time the music industry takes advantage of the TV screen.

This session provides a deep dive on CTV music video viewership trends, various viewing formats, and insights, as well as opportunities that CTV affords artist teams and labels.

Vinyl Projections & Lead Times — OH MY!!
This panel will bring to light both the missed opportunities from mis-projections in vinyl manufacturing and will also establish some Best Practices around projections, creating I/O’s and getting it RIGHT…from the beginning. Don’t be “that guy” that losses tons of sales and pisses off fans because your numbers were arbitrary; based on a price break or some other random factor. Sometimes bean counting can really help you out. But it’s not just about the projection the timing is critical, too. Lead times! We don’t just mean manufacturing lead times. We’re talking about pre-books and the critical run-up to release date. We’ll look at the risk and payoff.

Globalization of the Music Streaming World
Join our diverse group of international panelists as we deep dive into how some artists live out their careers within local success, and how the select few graduate through the ranks to global stardom.

What are your goals as an artist? There are acts who are quite happy staying in their town or city, and those who achieve national/regional/global fame. What does each group's data look like? Are there detectable signs of someone on the brink? How do some artists' work limit them to a certain geography, or how does it lend itself to easily traversing borders and culture? What streaming and social platforms matter more in various regions? How do the most developed markets differ from the emerging ones like Southeast Asia, Latin America, Middle East & North Africa, sub-Saharan Africa?

Maximizing The Niche: Superfans of Sub-Genres
You don't have to be from Nashville to know that not all Country fans are the same - and that principle holds across all major genres. So what makes a 90's Hip-Hop fan different from a Trap fan? And how do you have to adapt your consumer marketing when pivoting from Regional Mexican sub-genres to Reggaeton? Mainstream fans get the most coverage, but it is important to understand the unique characteristics of sub-genre fans to make sure you are reaching the appropriate audience when planning tours, social media, and brand marketing. Join Luminate for a closer look at the unique fans of some of these sub-genres (and more!). We'll take a look at these fanbases, the sub-genres superfans, and dive deep into their demos, attitudes, behaviors, and — most importantly — how to activate them.

Diversity, Education and Innovation

presented by Women In Vinyl
Women in Vinyl works to empower women, female-identifying, non-binary, LGBTQ+, BIPOC and otherwise marginalized humans working in the industry to create, preserve and improve the art of music on vinyl. We will discuss with key members of the industry, ways in which we can enable innovation and growth by driving home the importance of diversification and education.

With over a decade since the "resurgence" of vinyl there has been little discussion on job opportunities in this field, or how we can support a continued upward trajectory. Once the boom we're in starts to level out, what are ways in which we can build a staff that loves vinyl and doesn't just see it as just a manufacturing job? How can we help facilitate a new generation of artists, label managers, cutting engineers, and vinyl manufacturers that understand the medium and can take the reins and continue to drive how, and what we make to maintain its spot as the #1 physical product in the future.

Whose Tag Is It Anyway? – Solving the Metadata Tagging Problem
With context-based playlisting and AI search gaining massive traction online, it’s more important than ever that music is “tagged” with accurate and comprehensive descriptors. Ease of music discoverability is a common goal for both labels and DSPs, but with both parties and third parties creating contextual tags, the waters can get muddied. In this panel, representatives from top independent record labels and DSPs will meet to discuss how they are working together to resolve this problem, providing a blueprint for the most effective practices in tagging.

POV: When Your Catalog Song Goes Viral
From Rick-Rolling to a dude drinking Ocean Spray on a skateboard, viral trends have been inspiring discovery of older songs by younger audiences for years and now short form video platforms like TikTok, YouTube Shorts, and Instagram Reels have taken that to a whole new level. Not only can a viral moment catapult a catalog song onto charts around the world overnight, it can introduce millions of new listeners to an artist’s entire body of work.

How can you be prepared for a moment like that? What do you do when it happens? And most importantly, how do you turn millions of new listeners into true fans?

In this panel, we’ll discuss what “going viral” means in 2022 and how strategies to engage with audiences have evolved with the increasing influence of short-form video content and emerging platforms. We’ll also explore the value of maintaining fan engagement post-virality and what that can mean for an artist’s career development.

Avoiding Game Over: How to Properly Clear Music for Video Games
Video games are more popular than ever today, and music is playing a bigger role in driving the action. From the radio stations in the “Grand Theft Auto” franchise, to each year’s “Madden NFL” soundtrack, to the buzzed-about jukebox level of “Back 4 Blood,” video games are putting music in front of a wide audience in an attention-grabbing way, contributing to artist growth and song discovery. But as the gaming world evolves, music clearances are becoming more complicated. In addition to standard considerations, game developers must now take Twitch streaming, online play, and a variety of other factors into account when licensing music. In this panel, music clearance experts and gaming executives will discuss how they work together to negotiate fair deals that enable all parties to benefit.

Come Together: Fixing the Data Sharing Problem
The music industry has long struggled with data sharing, maintaining proprietary silos of information that often do not communicate with each other. While progress has been made with the introduction of new metadata standards and cleaning services, certain pressing issues remain. Often, recording and publishing data are written using different, incompatible standards, and maintaining proprietary information remains a key advantage for many companies. There is a need to bridge these divides to ensure that labels, publishers, PROs, DSPs, and distributors all have access to the most consistent and up-to-date information at all times to ensure rights-holders are appropriately compensated. In this panel, representatives from across the music value chain will discuss the value behind organized and transparent metadata, and how they plan to work together to achieve this goal.

Recent history gives us the passing of monumental legislation. But even since, the landscape has already changed drastically. Is copyright law prepared?

Have we achieved the goals and delivered on the promises of Web2 in music licensing? Will the new legislation affect change in Web3 the way it was thought to? Will Artificial Intelligence replace the writer; can the system in place govern AI creative output? Are we already behind again?

As we fully enter the streaming and technology era of the music business the dynamic between record labels and artists have become even more interesting. On one side, artists are becoming even more educated and empowered to find the best business situation for them, and there are plenty of options. Major record labels are going through their own transformations as companies are going public (IPO) and record industry revenues are inching closer to a new peak. The outlook for all in the music business could be viewed as bullish however the structure of artist deals have been under scrutiny lately.

This conversation will feature a combination of important stakeholders that are willing to speak transparently and honestly about where things are and what the future could look like as it relates to the relationship between artists and record labels. Their might not be one answer to what the future of the artist deal looks like but the goal of this conversation will be to continue to spark an important dialogue and hear from people who have the vantage point and experience to predict and offer insights.

Welcome & The Rights Behind Royalty Flows: Interdependent Roles in the Music Ecosystem
We’ve heard it or read it in textbooks, “The music industry relies on royalties generated by the licensing of copyrighted songs and recordings as a primary form of payment.” At face value that statement seems pretty straight forward. Dig under the hood and you will quickly see that there are numerous twists and turns in the path from creation of a song to the eventual flow of royalties back to the writer. Let’s take a look at the rights behind the money flows in today’s music ecosystem to set the stage for the conversations this afternoon on how missing or inaccurate data throughout the process can create significant issues.

How Cities & the American Rescue Plan Can Support Your Business
Due to the American Rescue Plan and the Build Back Better Plan, there is a ton of potential investment in every community in America for artists, music businesses and entrepreneurs. However, there's little guidance related to how to access it and who to talk to find out. Music companies are often small businesses and billions of dollars have been allocated to all states, cities and counties to invest in, support and provide direct relief to these businesses. This panel aims to provide best practice case studies of how this has worked in Delaware, Georgia and other places and offer attendees an actionable set of tools to find out where there's potential investment that they can access in their communities, who to talk to and what to say.

Women Behind the Boards: Driving Diversity in the Studio Space
Women, and especially women of color, are missing in the music industry. The USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative’s 2021 report found that women make up only 21.6% of artists and 12.6% of songwriters, both disappointing numbers. Even more shocking, women make up only 2.6% of producers, and that number is even lower for women of color. This lack of diversity in the studio space is unacceptable, silencing women’s voices in the increasingly important behind-the-scenes world where beats are created, lyrics and melodies are written, and something as small as the placement of a microphone can be instrumental to a song’s sound. How do we fix this problem? This panel will gather women currently working in the studio space to discuss what drew them to their positions, how to actively recruit women for studio jobs, and changes that can be made to make the studio a more equitable workspace.

Conquering Shared Data Challenges: How We Can Collectively Overcome
Most in the industry recognize that challenges need to be viewed in the context of the larger system and can be best solved when working together. To dig deeper into this idea, representatives will come together for a fireside chat to share their unique perspectives and to discuss industry realities, opportunities, and challenges, and a shared interest in addressing such challenges and level-setting the conversation.

This conversation will delve into the importance of getting the money already in the system to the right people, the need for improved data, and the roles and responsibilities necessary to do that. Rather than pointing fingers about breakdowns and challenges in the system, the panel will discuss their view on such issues, but more importantly, also discuss where songwriters, services, and others in the industry should be talking to each other and collectively looking for solutions. The audience will hear why data problems are vexing both for those at the creation and distribution points for songs, and discussion about the shared challenges and work needed to improve the system for all involved.

Driving The Credit Culture Movement
Every segment of the music industry has a moral responsibility to deliver transparency and equity for all creatives involved in making music. COVID has impacted the income and security of the incredible creatives who power the beautiful music we all enjoy on a daily basis. Music that keeps us all going. As a global music industry we must together drive parity and diversity ensuring work opportunities are enabled for all. This is culture. Individuals as well as companies – be they labels, publishers, distributors, streaming platforms or media –  help to drive immediate and accurate payment. How do we work towards a responsible and ethical future, where contract management is seamless? Where the painful and time consuming task of having to chase or investigate payments, sometimes years after a release has been enjoyed by many millions around the world, no longer exists? Communities that drive diversity and opportunities for all are key to our global music ecosystem; an industry currently valued in excess of $US 20 billion and growing. The panel will discuss the importance of crediting all accurately, reliably and responsibly, and the vital role that will play in facilitating a fairer and more solid future for all music creatives. How do we make proactive changes that make critical and positive differences to the people's lives who are at the coal face of music creation? We owe it to them to get this right.

It’s Time for The U.S. Music Biz to Focus on Neighboring Rights!
The U.S. music biz has a neighbor problem — and it's costing millions each year to US labels and performers. Neighboring rights (performance rights on sound recordings) are a major source of revenues for record labels and performers in most of the world, including the U.S. through SoundExchange. But with the US not having NR for terrestrial radio, a lot of revenue is left on the table, in the US and abroad. For a long time, U.S. performers could not claim NR for their music played in Europe due to the lack of reciprocity in the US. However, a recent decision from the European Court of Justice may change the way U.S. performers and labels can access NR in Europe. What does it mean for U.S. performers and labels? How could US labels and performers maximize their NR revenues? And, how could the U.S. join the rest of the world?

Beyond The Charts: Performing in Your Own League
The music industry is still obsessed with artists making it to #1 in the charts, and while it’s amazing to read their success stories, for many others the charts are not relevant at all. With so much data available nowadays, it poses the question of its contextualization, of comparing performance with artists from the same league as is so commonly done in sports. More importantly, the focus should be on finding and engaging an audience that will turn into fans and bring sustainable growth to the artist. How can we measure the true value of an artist across multiple platforms and revenue streams and compare them to similar artists? How can data help an artist’s team identify trends and make educated marketing decisions to help sustain the growth? Could we use an industry wide dataset to create benchmarks and identify what ‘good’ metrics are for artists?

The Future of Public Performance Licensing for Independent Touring Songwriters
Independent venues and performing artist/songwriters have experienced the most challenging time in the history of live music. While concerts are back, cancellations and low attendance are wreaking havoc on the industry and impacting the pocketbooks of songwriters performing at independent venues. As we continue to rebuild the independent live music ecosystem, we can use this inflection point to examine ways to improve public performance licensing and better support these creators.

This panel will discuss how to improve the connection between songwriters and the licensing revenue being collected on their behalf in independent venues across the country. We’ll explore what’s working in the current system, where room for improvement exists, and technological solutions to streamline the process and get working-class creators paid more quickly. Join stakeholders from across the live music spectrum in this candid conversation on shaping the future we want to see for public performance licensing.
